About the Work

Jean-Pascal Hesse, a historian, explores the life and works of the Marquis de Sade, a controversial figure since the eighteenth century who was also a man of letters, philosopher, and politician. Lacoste Castle, located in the South of France and owned by the Sade family, served as a refuge for the Marquis during periods of imprisonment. Hesse has gained unprecedented access to the Sade family archives and utilizes previously unpublished documents and imagery to trace Sade's story. In addition, he walks in the Marquis' footsteps in Lacoste Castle to offer new insights into the life and works of this infamous figure, while also shedding light on Sade's influence on psychology, theater, cinema, and literary criticism.

About the Author

Jean-Pascal Hesse, a native of the Lacoste region, is an accomplished historian and author of several books, including Pierre Cardin: 60 Years of Innovation (2010), Maxim's: Mirror of Parisian Life (2011), and The Palais Bulles (2012), all published in collaboration with Pierre Cardin by Assouline. In addition to his literary achievements, Hesse is a member of the Paris city council and organizes cultural events for the mayor of the 16th arrondissement.
