Depictions of animals have been among the preferred themes of the Daum manufactory since the beginning of the 20th century. It was Almaric Walter with Antonin Daum who inspired the animal movement under the influence of naturalism and the Art Nouveau movement. The manufactory then created decorative objects made of glass paste and realistic animal sculptures with a very astonishing polychromy.

About the Know-How
The technique of pâte de cristal is rare and ancient. This technique dates back to 5000 BC (pieces were found in the tombs of the pharaohs). After it had fallen into oblivion, Daum rediscovered it in 1900 and developed it further in 1968. The process is extremely difficult to master. The pieces, created by melting fragments of crystal in a mould, have a texture, a substance and a softness of contour that cannot be achieved with blown glass.Pâte de cristal is a Daum speciality, sometimes copied but never equalled; a precious material that gives the pieces a sculptural dimension and which has been ceaselessly refined. Pâte de cristal has the property of giving translucence to the shapes it reproduces. The brilliance of this material, the intensity of its colours and the myriad subtle shades all contribute to its uniqueness.
