About the Work

When Charles Lewis Tiffany established his first store in 1837 in New York City, selling French "fancy goods," he could not have foreseen the enduring glamour and prestige his name would evoke around the world. Tiffany & Co. has evolved from a small seller of gifts to a globally renowned symbol of luxury and romance, renowned for its exquisite gemstones, objects of love, and a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Tiffany is a name that reverberates across cultures and generations, an American institution gifted to the world, a haven of escapism, and a repository of dreams.

Throughout its 185-year history, Tiffany & Co. has continued to evolve creatively, embracing artistic and cultural influences while finding new ways to renew its rich legacy. Since the 1950s, Tiffany has employed designers who have become iconic figures, including Jean Schlumberger, Elsa Peretti, and Paloma Picasso, ensuring that Tiffany remains dynamic and relevant to each new generation. The company's design-driven dynamism honors and perpetuates the founder's pioneering spirit.

Today, Tiffany continues to bring fantasy to its annual high jewelry collections while also speaking to new generations through unique collections that offer personal self-expression, as envisioned by Charles Lewis Tiffany. The beat goes on, the pulse of New York and creativity, a quest for originality and modernity intertwined with reverence for Tiffany's great heritage.

This Assouline volume, available in both Icon and Ultimate editions, was conceived as the catalog to accompany the Vision and Virtuosity exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London. It captures all the romance and heritage of this world-famous American icon, highlighting Tiffany's creative inspirations, witty advertisements and window displays, Blue Book jewelry collections, and diamond expertise, as well as the stories behind the blue box, the classic film Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the magnificent yellow Tiffany Diamond.
