While studying at London’s Central Saint Martins, John Galliano, a fashion designer born in Gibraltar and raised in the UK, worked as a dresser at the National Theatre. This experience helped him learn about costumes and the power of illusions. During his frequent visits to London nightclubs, he met a group of artists and vibrant personalities, including Stephen Jones, who later became Dior’s milliner. Galliano founded his own brand in 1984 and achieved great success before becoming Creative Director of ready-to-wear and haute couture at Givenchy in 1995, followed by Artistic Director of the women’s collections at Dior in 1996. He distinguished himself with extravagant shows that combined cultural and historical inspirations, creating a global mix of references and inventiveness with a touch of romanticism and history. Galliano’s innate sense of spectacle and haute couture know-how has established him as a master of the silhouette. In this book, the fifth volume in a series paying tribute to Dior’s Artistic Directors, Galliano’s exceptional silhouettes for Dior from 1996 to 2011 are highlighted through Laziz Hamani’s photographs, as well as shots by Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, Irving Penn and Paolo Roversi. Galliano has reinvented the art and role of haute couture, creating a new type of contemporary fashion by combining his travels' influences with the rich heritage of Christian Dior.
