Tom Volf, a filmmaker, developed a passion for Maria Callas years after the legendary soprano retired from performing. Since then, Volf has traveled extensively, interviewing Callas’s closest friends and colleagues and uncovering lost archives related to her life and work. These efforts have revealed a wealth of previously unknown photographs, many of which originally came from Callas’s own albums. With the support of many of her loved ones, including her best friend Nadia Stancioff and her favorite conductor Georges Prêtre, who agreed to collaborate on a book about her for the first time in forty years, Volf has produced Maria by Callas. This book is the result of countless hours of research, offering a new perspective on the life and work of this legendary diva through a personal album that Callas herself might have presented, invoking her own voice. This material is at the center of the Maria by Callas project, which includes a film, an exhibition, and a collection of original live recordings.
