Valerie Steele, a curator and fashion historian, presents a selection of the most iconic dresses of the twentieth century in a limited edition Ultimate Collection format. The book is handmade and presented in a linen clamshell. Steele has chosen one hundred dresses from designers such as Poiret, Pucci, Doucet, Dior, Vionnet, and Valentino, which caused a sensation either on the runway or upon entering a room, and went on to inspire new directions in fashion. The compilation includes Poiret's figure-liberating 1907 gown, Madame Grès’s sublimely draped goddess creation from 1938, Jean Paul Gaultier's shockingly exaggerated cone-bust corset dress circa 1984, and Hussein Chalayan’s awe-inspiring remote-control fiberglass Airplane dress from 2000. The book is subjective in its choices, but is sure to elicit recognition and surprise.

About the Author

Valerie Steele holds a PhD from Yale University and is the director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT). Over the past decade, she has curated more than twenty exhibitions and is the founder and editor-in-chief of Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture. Dr. Steele has made appearances on various television shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Undressed. The Washington Post has hailed her as one of the "smartest women in fashion," and she was named among the "Fashion's 50 Most Powerful" by the New York Daily News.
