Andy Warhol’s Pop Art and insightful commentary on advertising and celebrity culture are still highly acclaimed and relevant today, even after many years of their creation. Although Warhol himself was a controversial figure both personally and professionally, he played a crucial role in pioneering the Pop movement, and his works now command astronomical prices. Eric Shiner, a Warhol expert and former director of the Andy Warhol Museum, curates the 100 most important and unique works that illustrate the evolution of this celebrated artist in this evocative addition to Assouline’s Ultimate Collection. This stunning compendium traces Warhol’s dynamic career from the late 1940s to the end of the 1980s, including rare and highly prized pieces that are part of museum collections and cannot be obtained by a single collector. While many people are familiar with Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Marilyn Diptych, Andy Warhol: The Impossible Collection delves deeper, presenting less well-known yet equally compelling pieces from Warhol’s impressive oeuvre, encompassing paintings, prints, sculptures, films, and photographs.
Eric Shiner is the senior vice president of contemporary art at Sotheby’s, having previously served as the director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2016 and as the museum’s Milton Fine Curator of Art from 2008 to 2010. He is a recognized expert on Asian contemporary art and Andy Warhol, with six years of experience living and working in Japan and having served as assistant curator of the inaugural Yokohama Triennale in 2001. Shiner has curated contemporary art exhibitions in numerous cities worldwide, including the major Warhol retrospective that traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo between 2012 and 2014. Among his notable exhibitions are Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei (2015/16), Deborah Kass: Before and Happily Ever After (2012), and Armory Focus: USA at the Armory Show (2013).
