About the Work

Martin Scorsese is widely regarded as one of the most talented living directors in the world, with a career spanning over five decades and many critically acclaimed gangster films like Mean Streets, Casino, and Goodfellas. His latest work in the genre is The Irishman, a monumental epic that ventures into new territory. Featuring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, the movie explores organized crime in post-World War II America through the eyes of Frank Sheeran, a veteran who worked alongside some of the most infamous figures of the 20th century. Spanning multiple decades, the film unravels one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries, the disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers an unparalleled journey through the underworld of organized crime, revealing its inner workings, rivalries, and links to mainstream politics.

This beautiful monograph, with special on-set photographs and studio portraits by Brigitte Lacombe and unit photography by Niko Tavernise, and a text by author and film critic Tom Shone, takes readers behind the scenes and delves into the making of The Irishman in the context of Scorsese's expansive career. Shone's interviews with Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino, Pesci, and the rest of the cast and crew situate The Irishman as a reflection of Scorsese's own life and times, a poignant and piercing exploration of loyalty, betrayal, and regret.

The Irishman was initially released on November 27, 2019, and is now available on Netflix.
