About the Collection
Chagall's life was graced by bouquets of flowers from the moment he met his future wife Bella in 1909. According to the artist, "The first flower was brought to me by Bella...". He frequently depicts these flowers in his works, often arranged in a vase. They are not wildflowers growing in their natural setting, but carefully selected and brought to his home and studio. Chagall admired them, absorbing their beauty before capturing their essence in his paintings, almost as if giving shape to his imagination and inner world.
In Chagall's art, the bouquet of flowers, much like the angel, acrobat, and self-portrait, has become an iconic element that lifts us to a spiritual plane, symbolizing offering among other things. The presence of flowers immediately expresses the perpetual search for perfection and beauty, transporting us to a world of vivid colors and magnificence, prompting us to ponder its significance.

About the Manufacture
Depending on the style of the collection, the application of the decoration is more or less complex. Some valuable pieces are painted by hand and the craftsmen show exceptional dexterity in using a wide variety of brushes.
In most cases, a leaf decoration (decalcomania principle) is applied by hand on the white porcelain. It is dipped in water so as to detach the design from its paper backing and applied to the piece. The leaf decoration is produced by different printing processes, originally lithography, now silk-screen printing. The Bernardaud factory is one of the few in Limoges to have a printing works.
