About the Collection
On May 5, 1829, a man named Mr. Schaumbourg placed an order with the Royal Sèvres Manufactory for a porcelain set adorned with floral wreaths. Unbeknownst to the Manufactory, the German prince Guillaume II of Hesse had secretly purchased the service for 60 individuals. The original set was the largest ever created by the Royal Manufactory.
Sèvres was renowned globally for the talent of its painters and the craftsmanship of its delicate porcelain. The final pieces of the service, consisting of 566 items, were delivered in October 1831, taking over two years to create. Botanique draws inspiration from the illustrations and work of painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The flowers are depicted with a remarkable degree of realism, surpassing the traditional bouquets of the 18th century and emphasizing each species' unique characteristics. The botanical style was at its height in the early 19th century and reflects the era's passion for encyclopedic knowledge. The name of each flower is indicated on the back of every plate.
To create this exceptional service, the Ancienne Manufacture Royale carefully selected the most exquisite pieces from the original set, which are now on display at the museum located in Fasanerie castle, near Fulda, Germany.

About the Manufacture
Depending on the style of the collection, the application of the decoration is more or less complex. Some valuable pieces are painted by hand and the craftsmen show exceptional dexterity in using a wide variety of brushes.
In most cases, a leaf decoration (decalcomania principle) is applied by hand on the white porcelain. It is dipped in water so as to detach the design from its paper backing and applied to the piece. The leaf decoration is produced by different printing processes, originally lithography, now silk-screen printing. The Bernardaud factory is one of the few in Limoges to have a printing works.
