Depictions of animals have been among the preferred themes of the Daum manufactory since the beginning of the 20th century. It was Almaric Walter with Antonin Daum who inspired the animal movement under the influence of naturalism and the Art Nouveau movement. The manufactory then created decorative objects made of glass paste and realistic animal sculptures with a very astonishing polychromy.

About the Artist
Salvador Dalí, a renowned Catalan painter, sculptor and writer, was born in Figueras, Spain on May 11, 1904 and passed away on January 23, 1989 in the same city. He is widely regarded as one of the most important surrealist artists of the 20th century, known for his unique and charismatic style filled with creativity and provocation. In 1968, Dali collaborated with Daum for the first time on “La Fleur du mal”, which marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship between the two. The translucent nature of “pâte de cristal” provided Dali with a suitable medium to express the metamorphoses suggested by his "paranoid and critical" perception of reality. According to Dali, "Glass paste is truly a Dalinian material. Hence I have used it to create masterpieces; I am delighted with this new material, which has both the molecular elasticity of a snail and the consistency of the Perpignan train station."
