About the Artist
Born in 1962 in Benin, Romuald Hazoumé is a renowned artist known for his sculpted masks made from gasoline cans. He uses this rough material to revisit the traditional African art of masks and to denounce modern slavery. His works, which are both aesthetic and political, are collected worldwide. Hazoumé creates outsized and disturbing pieces, and is considered one of the most important contemporary African artists. For Daum, he has created "Blue Oil Head," an emblematic sculpture that crystallizes his message and denounces the black market traffic of petrol, which is used by 90% of the population in Benin.
