About the Article
Carlo Scarpa, who designed and conceived objects in the 1940s, was clearly oriented towards the traditions of the East. His forms were inspired by oriental porcelain. In the 1960s, Tobia Scarpa followed with his monochrome and minimalist objects known as "Opachi", characterised by elegant lines.
The Opachi collection by Venini presents a series of mouth-blown glass objects in elegant, opaque colours. The clean lines and minimalist shapes emphasise the rich colours of the glass, which features unique patterns and textures thanks to the handcrafted production. The Opachi collection includes vases, bowls and other decorative objects and is a true eye-catcher in any setting.
About the Technique
The Soffiato technique gets its name from the fact that craftsmen blow air into a long metal rod connected to the glass to stretch and shape it - a tradition in glassmaking that goes back thousands of years. The experience and skill of the master glassmakers, combined with this ancient process, transform simple glass into true artistic masterpieces, unique in their kind.
About the Designers
Tobia Scarpa graduated in architecture from the University of Venice in 1969 and has since worked in the fields of design, architecture and restoration. Together with Afra Bianchin, he created numerous works and also approached the world of glass when he joined VENINI in 1958. Throughout his career he has received several prizes and awards and some of his works are exhibited in the most prestigious museums worldwide. Since 2000, he has also been a teacher at the ClaDIS Faculty of Industrial Design in Venice.
