The glass objects seem to have been smoothed by the current and are reminiscent of stones or ice formations of mountain torrents. The shades of mint green or grape blue on their surface give them a natural radiance and create traces of landscapes.
Similar to the way the pebble is carried along by the stream of the waterfall and shaped by it, the master in the fornace (glass furnace) shapes his glass by enveloping and modelling it with heat and moulding tools.
The Soffiato technique gets its name from the fact that craftsmen blow air into a long metal rod connected to the glass to stretch and shape it - a tradition in glassmaking that goes back thousands of years. The experience and skill of the master glassmakers, combined with this ancient process, transform simple glass into true artistic masterpieces, unique in their kind.
Michela Cattai currently lives in Milan and attended the Academy of Fine Arts. She was selected to take part in a group exhibition at the Murano Glass Museum. Although she lives in Milan, she remains connected to Venice, where she deepened her knowledge of glass and experimented with the practice of blown glass. In April 2017 Michela had an exhibition of her glass research at the Sala del Cenacolo in Rome, the Chamber of Deputies. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and her works can be seen in private collections and international museums.
