The Doge collection is inspired by the splendour and authority of the highest dignitary of the Serenissima from the Middle Ages to modern times and reflects these qualities in its glass.
The Rigadin technique involves blowing a glass ball into a bronze mould with grooves of triangular cross-section. This creates a ribbed pattern inside the glass. By additionally turning the mould, one can create the twisted rigadin (rigadin ritorto).
Napoleone Martinuzzi, a sculptor, designer and glassmaking entrepreneur, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. From 1917 he created various works for D'Annunzio, who was a great admirer of his. From 1922 to 1931, Martinuzzi directed the glass museum in Murano. He then founded the company "Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini & C." with Paolo Venini and Francesco Zecchin and acted as artistic director. In the early years, he continued the artistic concepts of his predecessor Vittorio Zecchin and created fascinating pieces of blown glass. Later, he developed his own style from his experience as a sculptor. In 1932, he left VENINI and founded the "Zecchin-Martinuzzi Vetri Artistici e Mosaici" with Francesco Zecchin. There he produced refined opaque and pulegose glass with a remarkable sculptural effect.
