How can it be that such a spontaneous form emerges from the complicated and elaborate Canne technique? Massimo Vignelli's 1956 design was awarded the Compasso d'Oro of the same year. Fungo (mushroom) is available as a pendant and table lamp.
The Fungo collection combines spontaneity with careful technical research, reflecting the dual identity of nature and design.
The Canne technique enables the production of monochrome or transparent/opaque glass elements in infinite colour variations by using glass pastes in different colours. The shape of the glass element remains constant - it is a drawn and circular glass rod. To achieve the desired result, the glass rods are usually folded, melted and blown. The difficulty of execution makes the result an extremely precious object with an impressive overall effect.
Massimo Vignelli was born in Milan and studied architecture at the universities of Milan and Venice. He travelled the United States from 1957 to 1960 and then settled in Milan to found the Vignelli design and architecture firm with Lella Vignelli. He later became co-founder and design director of Unimark International Corporation before opening Vignelli Associati in 1971 and Vignelli Design in 1978. His work includes graphic and corporate identity programmes, publications, graphic and architectural exhibitions, interior design, furniture and consumer product design for numerous American and European companies. His works are part of the permanent collections of major museums worldwide.
