Tapio Wirkkala honours the landscapes close to his heart by transforming glass into shapes of ice and water using the Incalmo technique, creating memories of Finland's nature.
The Piatto di Tapio collection fascinates with a constant swirl of water and glass that captures and holds the eye beyond boundaries and classical limitations.
The Incalmo technique is one of the most complex processing techniques. It involves combining two hot-blown shapes around the circumference to create the evocative meeting of different areas, usually of different colours, in the same object.
Tapio Wirkkala was a well-known Finnish artist and designer who made the Finnish school internationally famous. Already in the 1960s, when he designed his first objects for VENINI, he had had an outstanding career in various fields of design. His collaboration with VENINI was an interesting phase in his career and at the same time influenced the world of Murano glass making. He further developed the "Incalmo" technique and often combined it with "Mezzafiligrana" and "Murrine" due to the skills of the glassmakers and the rich colour palette. His works can be seen in the most important museums worldwide.
