Igor Vitalyevich Savitsky, an art collector, dedicated his life to rescuing one of the most important collections of Russian avant-garde art from disappearing forever. His efforts have allowed artists, previously obscured by Stalin's regime, to be rediscovered. Today, the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art, named after Savitsky, holds one of the largest collections of this art in Nukus, Uzbekistan. It is known as the "Louvre of the Steppes" and is second in size only to the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg. This book highlights a unique part of the museum's collection: Avant-Garde Orientalist art. These works were created between 1910 and 1930 by artists who traveled or moved to Uzbekistan, exploring the region's culture, vibrant colors, unique light, landscapes, and architecture. They maintained their integrity as real artists, creating captivating works of art, rather than simply serving as instruments of state propaganda.
