About the Work

Martine Assouline presents a grand new title that pays tribute to the unique cultural personality of New York City. As a city whose DNA comes from all over the world, New York is a fantastic and unparalleled place belonging to America, yet not entirely American. This book takes readers on a journey through the most important periods of the city, exploring all five boroughs from Manhattan and Brooklyn to the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Experience the city's rich history and the development of its world-famous skyline, from immigration in the early 20th century to Prohibition in the 1920s and the youth revolution in the 1960s.

The book features iconic images from renowned photographers such as Edward Steichen and Peter Lindbergh, as well as texts and quotes from top writers including E.B. White, Edith Wharton, Tom Wolfe, and Jay Mcinerney. It also highlights memorable moments in Broadway and Studio 54, and the dreams of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The slipcased volume, designed with typography created especially for the occasion, is a true collectible that will be treasured by lovers of this great city for decades to come.
