Depictions of animals have been among the preferred themes of the Daum manufactory since the beginning of the 20th century. It was Almaric Walter with Antonin Daum who inspired the animal movement under the influence of naturalism and the Art Nouveau movement. The manufactory then created decorative objects made of glass paste and realistic animal sculptures with a very astonishing polychromy.

About the Artist

Born in 1953 in Brussels, Belgian artist Madeleine van der Knoop resides and works in Antwerp, where she is renowned for her impressive bird sculptures. She possesses a particular talent for reinterpreting these animals with intense realism, transposing what she perceives with the right proportions and adding a personal touch. Van der Knoop collaborates regularly with Maison Daum, and their craftsmen bring her works to life through "pâte de cristal," giving depth and luminosity to the colors and every detail of her sculptures.
