The decorative furnishings market has seen a surge in interest from collectors, leading to record-breaking sales in recent years. This selection of furniture designs, curated by design expert Frédéric Chambre, tells the story of a century of innovation in form, materials, and techniques. The designs can be traced across changing trends, echoing themes seen in art history such as design versus the machine, craft, and art. From Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts to Bauhaus, Art Deco, Pop Art, the Memphis school, and into the digital age, this hand-bound, oversized luxury edition showcases the development of twentieth-century design. It highlights the dynamic story of an innovative century through the evolution of everyday human objects.
Frédéric Chambre has degrees in law and art history, and began his career as a partner at the Calmels-Chambre-Cohen auction house in 1996. He then co-founded Pierre Bergé and Associates in 2002, where he became vice president and partner in 2005. In 2009, he co-organized the sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection at Christie’s in Paris. Chambre joined PIASA in 2012 as head of strategy and development, and he currently holds the position of vice president and general manager.
