About the Work

In 1968, the coastal Arab emirates faced a vulnerable phase as the British, who had protected them for 150 years, announced their withdrawal from the region. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, recognized that the emirates had to unite under a single nation to move forward. In December 1971, after negotiations, the United Arab Emirates was established, and Sheikh Zayed was named its founding father and first President.

This book, Sheikh Zayed: An Eternal Legacy, celebrates Sheikh Zayed's life and legacy, exploring the five pillars that defined his character - father, unifier, conservationist, faithful man, and modernist. Myrna Ayad, in this compelling addition to the Ultimate Collection and Assouline's first tome surrounding a notable Arab Royal figure, examines Sheikh Zayed's dedication to his people and his country's progression. Under his leadership, the UAE grew to become a towering example of economic, social, and political progress in the Middle East.

This volume brings Sheikh Zayed's life and achievements to vivid life through archival photographs and exclusive interviews with politicians and family members who knew the ruler intimately. As this year marks the UAE's extraordinary 50th anniversary, this volume is a fitting and reverent ode to the country's creation and its founding father, Sheikh Zayed. It reveals that even fifteen years after the end of his reign, Sheikh Zayed's legacy continues through the people who are continuing his work, steering the UAE into a bright and progressive future.
