Guy Laliberté has captured stunning photographs of Earth from his experience in space aboard the International Space Station. His photos showcase the colors and textures of Earth's surface, only visible from 220 miles away. Despite the ISS moving at 17,500 miles per hour (about 5 miles per second) and completing six tours of Earth every 24 hours, Laliberté's skills as a photographer have resulted in truly unique and original conditions. He used Nikon D3S and Nikon D3X digital-SLR cameras to capture the abstract paintings of deserts, the mini-mountain ranges of cities, and the faces and figures revealed in nature.Laliberté's personal spaceflight was dedicated to raising awareness about the water issues facing humankind, making it the first "poetic social mission" in space. Proceeds from the book's sales go towards Laliberté's One Drop Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to fight poverty worldwide by ensuring everyone has access to water, both now and in the future.
Guy Laliberté is a native of Québec City, with a diverse background that includes being an accordionist, stilt-walker, and fire-eater. Laliberté was a daring innovator, and he discovered and nurtured the talents of street performers from the Fête foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul.Laliberté was the first person to bring together different cultures, artistic forms, and acrobatic disciplines, creating the hallmark of Cirque du Soleil. Since 1984, he has led the creative team in developing every show. Today, Cirque du Soleil is a vast international enterprise, with operations on five continents, and an influence that extends far beyond its performances.
