When people hear “The Hamptons,” luxury often comes to mind. It's a place where poolside parties, stunning waterfront estates, and endless beach days with the upper class prevail. But before this celebrated peninsula became the preferred summer destination for the elite, its forty miles of rolling sand dunes were an idyllic landscape for English settlers. Once New York high society discovered the charming villages and salty air, they turned The Hamptons into a summer oasis. The creatives then followed, looking for a retreat to write and sketch away from the noise of urban life. The likes of John Steinbeck in Sag Harbor, Jackson Pollock in The Springs, and Andy Warhol in Montauk all found refuge in The Hamptons. Now, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Calvin Klein, Madonna, Alec Baldwin, and Martha Stewart all own homes there. Regardless of their background, all Hamptonites, official or honorary, can attest to the unique allure of the area – one that continually shifts to meet the desires of each seasonal guest and lifelong dweller.Hamptons Private offers readers an exclusive look beyond the manicured hedges in Amagansett, the chance to charter a yacht off the shore of The Springs, to experience the surfer's haven at Ditch Plains and to attend a polo match in Bridgehampton. Each page portrays the quintessential leisure of The Hamptons and showcases the unique quality of light that artist Willem de Kooning called a “miracle.” One can almost hear the thwock of tennis balls at The Meadow Club, the whispers of exclusive parties, the rhythms of seaside music at The Surf Lodge, and even the first bite of a lobster roll at Lunch. The Hamptons is both a natural retreat and a place where A-listers come to be seen, embodying a boho-chic spirit reflected in its beautiful people and breathtaking surroundings.
Dan Rattiner, an award-winning writer, cartoonist, and photographer, first fell in love with The Hamptons when he moved to Montauk at the age of sixteen, and has been a resident of the East End ever since. At age twenty, Rattiner founded the widely-read Dan’s Papers, a free weekly publication. He has also contributed to The New York Times and hosted “The Hamptons Report,” a weekly radio show for WQXR. Rattiner has written several books, including In the Hamptons, In the Hamptons Too, In the Hamptons Forever, and Still in the Hamptons.
