For a century, Columbia Pictures has stood as a luminary in the cinematic world, represented by the iconic Torch Lady. From timeless classics such as His Girl Friday to contemporary masterpieces like Taxi Driver, the studio has made an indelible impact on film history. Sam Wasson's narrative of the studio's journey, enriched by Tom Rothman's personal insights, celebrates its achievements and enduring spirit. Columbia Pictures: 100 Years of Cinema leads readers through the studio's diverse filmography with illuminating texts by Chris Cotonou, highlighting its influence on cinema and the talents who have shaped its legacy.
Tom Rothman serves as chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, making him the longest-tenured executive among modern-era studio heads. In this role, Rothman oversees the studio's global motion picture operations, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Animation, and Sony Pictures Classics. Before joining Sony, he was the longtime co-chairman and CEO of Twentieth Century Fox, where he founded Fox Searchlight Pictures. Earlier in his career, he also led production for the Samuel Goldwyn Company in the early 1990s.
Under Rothman's leadership, Sony's motion picture business has seen some of its most profitable years. He has launched or revived numerous franchises, such as Spider-verse, Venom, Uncharted, Jumanji, and Bad Boys. Known for his passion for movies and advocacy for the theatrical experience, Rothman has attracted numerous top-tier filmmakers to the studio, including Sam Mendes, Danny Boyle, Greta Gerwig, Quentin Tarantino, Edgar Wright, Jon Watts, Jason Reitman, Ang Lee, Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, and many others. In 2019, Sony had the distinction of having two films, Little Women and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, both nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Sam Wasson is a best-selling author known for The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood and other books on film.
Chris Cotonou is a writer and editor with contributions to GQ, Esquire, Robb Report, the London Evening Standard, The Rake, Gentleman’s Journal, and more. He is also the deputy editor and co-founder of A Rabbit’s Foot, a non-cyclical film journal circulated worldwide.
