Marbella is both a blank canvas and a layered manuscript. It can be anything to anyone. You might encounter a rock star in the morning and European royalty in the afternoon. Few places offer such unique intersections of personalities. To paraphrase Churchill, it is a kaleidoscope, wrapped in a mosaic, inside a melting pot. Over the years, successive waves of visitors have left their marks, making Marbella a social archaeological site where generations have enjoyed sun-drenched leisure. Today, Marbella is often compared to a European Miami, but beneath the glitzy surface lies a simpler past.
In the 1950s, Marbella was a quiet, dusty, traditional village, and the old town still retains its charm with narrow streets where you can touch the rough white walls on either side. During Easter, solemn and dramatic religious processions wind through this maze of alleys and squares, continuing a tradition that has lasted for generations. Yet what is truly remarkable about Marbella is how much has remained unchanged. Historical figures long associated with the coast, including Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, may have passed into history, but their legacy lives on in those who follow.
With personal narratives by historian and journalist Nicholas Foulkes, a longtime visitor to Marbella, this colorful volume captures the varied aspects of this picturesque port, from the mountains to the beaches, from the charming old town to the glamorous nightlife.
Author, historian, and journalist Nicholas Foulkes is a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, Financial Times How to Spend It, GQ, and The Rake magazine. Renowned for his trilogy of nineteenth-century British histories—Last of the Dandies, Dancing into Battle, and Gentlemen and Blackguards—he has authored around thirty books on history, the arts, and style. His recent works include a biography of the painter Bernard Buffet (Random House), a biography of Princess Ira von Fürstenberg (Harper Collins), and Time Tamed, a history of humankind’s measurement of time from the Paleolithic era to the Moon landings (Simon & Schuster). His books for Assouline include Bals: Legendary Costume Balls of the Twentieth Century (2011), Swans: Legends of the Jet Society (2013), The Impossible Collection of Watches (2014), and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso (2020).
