Art House is a celebration of a remarkable life devoted to living with art and a friendship dedicated to designing homes that honor it. Chara Schreyer, one of the world’s foremost art collectors, has amassed an impressive collection of six hundred works. Her collaboration with interior designer Gary Hutton has produced five magnificent residences to showcase her collection over four decades. Art House is a stunning visual journey through these homes, ranging from an architectural masterpiece to a high-rise “gallery as home.”

Schreyer's collection, influenced by scholarship and conceptualism, encompasses all forms of media, including masterpieces by renowned artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Man Ray, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, and Eva Hesse, as well as contemporary artists like Gedi Sibony, Rachel Harrison, Glenn Ligon, Christian Marclay, and more. Art House offers an intimate view of hundreds of these works in spaces designed to be empathetic with them intellectually and materially.

With original photography by nationally renowned photographer Matthew Millman, and text by Alisa Carroll, editor in chief of San Francisco’s leading design magazine, SFC&G, Art House is a must-have for art and design enthusiasts. The book features a foreword by Neal Benezra, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

About the Author

Chara Schreyer is a prominent modern and contemporary art collector, recognized by ArtNews on its Top 200 collectors list for the last 15 years. Her collection consists of both established and emerging 21st-century artists. She is based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, serves on the boards of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA), and the Hammer Museum, and supports many art organizations. Schreyer holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley, and is dedicated to arts education, having given over 200 tours of her collections at her five homes.

Gary Hutton is a highly sought-after interior designer known for his artistic and conceptual approach. He has designed residences for leading collectors, CEOs, and tastemakers, as well as the interiors of the new San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design. His furniture collection, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, is available in showrooms across San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and beyond. Hutton studied fine art with artists Manuel Neri and Wayne Thibaud at UC Davis and holds a graduate degree in design from California College of the Arts (CCA).
