About the Article
Paolo Venini was inspired by faraway places between fantasy and reality when designing the vase. He clothed it in unique and precious hues such as aquamarine and horizon blue to take it out into the world to be admired. The Labuan vase's journey took it from East to West and back, starting as early as 1933, and it is still travelling today.
The Labuan collection not only transports viewers to unfamiliar places through Salgari's writings, but also shows the enduring fascination with orientalism and exoticism taking shape in the form of glass.

The Soffiato technique gets its name from the fact that craftsmen blow air into a long metal rod connected to the glass to stretch and shape it - a tradition in glassmaking that goes back thousands of years. The experience and skill of the master glassmakers, combined with this ancient process, transform simple glass into true artistic masterpieces, unique in their kind.
