As the 20th century began, there was a desire for a new design style that would capture the spirit of the times. In the first few decades of the century, various efforts to create a design language suited to modern tastes culminated in the 1925 Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, which marked the birth of Art Deco. This design movement drew on a range of decorative influences, from historical styles to exotic elements and avant-garde art currents like Cubism.Art Deco wasn't a unified movement but a design approach that applied decorative elements to consumer goods during the interwar period. It manifested in every discipline of the applied arts and became a global phenomenon. Consumers were drawn to Art Deco's decorative qualities, and the style appeared everywhere from skyscrapers and ocean liners to fashion and everyday items. As the world changed between the two World Wars, Art Deco symbolized modernity, sophistication, glamour, and progress. Though its popularity waned during World War II, interest in Art Deco returned in the 1960s and remains strong today. Art Deco Style, featuring an introduction by Jared Goss, showcases the multifaceted allure of this design phenomenon and its continued influence on our culture. As part of the Style series, it joins Assouline's successful Travel series in exploring iconic art movements and design styles.
Jared Goss, a former associate curator in the department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is an independent scholar who authored French Art Deco, published by the museum in 2014. He also wrote the Introduction to Jean-Michel Frank for Assouline in 2018.
